Leslie R. Johns, age 85, formerly of Nixa, passed away Friday afternoon, January 4, 2013 at Missouri Veterans Home, Mount Vernon, MO. He was born July 13, 1927 the son of Warren and Lacy (Brown) Johns. On October 29,1948 he was united in marriage to Shirley Davenport. Les proudly served his country as a Master Sergeant with the United States Army, during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He began his service in 1947 and was honorably discharged after serving in both wars. Later, he retired as yard foreman from Herrman Lumber in Springfield, after being a dedicated employee for 36 years. Les was preceded in death by his parents, his youngest daughter Jackie Johns in 1985, his wife Shirley in 1988, and six brothers Floyd R., Jimmie W., Lora E. "Bud", Arlie H.. "Johnny," Lloyd C. "Clay," and George R. "Randall," Johns. Les is survived by three daughters, Janis Walker and husband Lee of Sparta, Joyce Ketterman and husband John of Highlandville and Jeanne Johns of Nixa. A very special friend and companion, Betty Tennis of Nixa. He is also survived by four grandchildren, David Walker, Karen Peak and husband Roy, Lacey Gregg and Nick Ketterman; five great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Kallie Bilyeu, Kelsey and Kyle Walker and Dustin Peak; two step-granddaughters, Jackie Miller and husband Andrew, Jodie Holmes and husband Brett; four step-great-grandchildren, Courtnie and Camryn Miller, Ashton Isbell and Savannah Holmes; three brothers, Paul L. Missoula, MT, Roger L. "Rod" Vancouver, WA and Mike O. Johns, Gresham OR.; three sisters, Novella Killian, Simi Valley, CA, Judy Newkirk, Torrance CA and Carol McGuire, Nixa; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other caring relatives and several good friends. Graveside funeral services were held 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2013 in Sparta Cemetery with Pastor Jamie Bilyeu officiating. Visitation was held 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark. Online condolences may be shared at
