Jesse Lowell Shortt

Jesse Lowell Shortt, age 75, of Springfield, MO formerly of Ozark passed away on January 11, 2014. He was born October 20, 1938, in Ongo, MO to Emmitt and Ona Shortt and lived the majority of his life in the Ozark area. From a young age he was active in sports and excelled in basketball. Lowell was in the Army Reserves for 6 months and would often tell wonderful stories from that time. In 1961 he was joined in union with Beverly Sample Shortt, which resulted in the birth of his first born son, Dane.  He later married Betty Inman Shortt and had a daughter, Sarah and son, Mark. Betty and Lowell were married for 20 years and continued to be friends long after, even spending family vacations together.Even though Lowell had a History degree from MSU, Lowell, dedicated his life to the insurance business and was a skilled salesman and entrepreneur. He built Shortt Insurance in Ozark from the ground up into a very successful business which he sold in 2000. He was heavily involved in the Kiwanis program and at one point served as President. He was also a loyal Christian and a member of James River Assembly, which provided him a rock solid spiritual relationship that he shared by example.He was an extremely generous and devoted father and spent countless hours advising and supporting each of his children in their life journey. He was a loving brother and was very proud of his brothers and sisters and would often share fond memories of their childhood.Lowell also had several life-long friendships that meant the world to him. They attended sporting events, took trips, played a lot of golf and shared in general fellowship together. He treasured those relationships and was blessed to have them in his life.In 2009, Lowell was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and dementia, which ultimately led to his passing. Even in that state he shared his love of life and laughter with his family and friends right until the very end.He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmitt and Ona Shortt, and sister Vonda Shortt.He is survived by his children, Dane Shortt and wife Candace of Belfry, MT, Sarah Shelburn and husband Tim of Springfield, MO, Mark Shortt and wife Angel of Ozark, MO, brothers Noel Shortt and wife Cletis of Bradleyville, MO, Dale Shortt of Ozark, MO, Don Shortt and wife Donna of Festus, MO, and sister Ivonne Stone;  two granddaughters – Ava Nicole Shortt and Maggie Mae Shelburn and three grandsons, TJ Shortt, Josh Shortt and Joseph Shortt.Funeral services for Lowell will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2014 in Barnes family Funeral Home, Ozark. Burial will follow in Sparta Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 13 in the funeral home. Online condolences may be shared at www.barnesfamilyfunerals.com.
