Ret. Major George Warren Wheelock

     Major George Warren Wheelock, 53, currently of Chadwick, Missouri, passed away  Tuesday, July 11, 2017. Major Wheelock was a 24 ½ year veteran of the United States Army. At age 17, while in high school, he enlisted in the Wisconsin Army National Guard Infantry. After graduation from college, he served as a Regular Army Infantry Officer until his retirement in 2006. Major Wheelock served in a variety of Infantry assignments as a Rifleman, Grenadier, Machine Gunner, Team Leader, Squad Leader, Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, Company Commander, and Battalion Commander twice, and was selected for Lieutenant Colonel. He also served in a variety of Infantry staff and command assignments, culminating as a Brigade Operations Officer, S3.His Professional Military Education included One Station Unit Training, Airborne School, The Infantry Officer’s basic course, Jumpmaster School, Pathfinder School, The Long Range Surveillance Leader’s Course, The Infantry Officer’s Advanced Course, Combat Lifesaver Training, Air Assault School, The Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School, and The Combined Arms Staff School. His Civilian Education included graduation from Taylor High School, Taylor, WI, A bachelor’s of science degree from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and a Master’s of Science degree from Troy University. He received numerous awards and decorations but is most proud of his Master Parachutist Badge, as well as his German and Australian Parachute badges. He was first married to the late Holly Mattke (of Sparta, WI) Wheelock, with whom he had Matthew and Faith Wheelock. Holly died in 1998. He later was married to Lisa (Lindley) Wheelock whose son,  Sydney Guardiola, became part of his family.  He was preceded in death by parents Warren and Marie Hanson Wheelock.  He is survived by sister Diane (Stan)  Hauser of Onalaska, WI, sister Donna (Kenny) Christensen of Branson, MO; nieces Ruth (Aaron) Hauser Eltrich, of Maquoketa, Iowa (children Abigail and Greyson), Leah Riutzel, and Rachel Riutzel (fiance, Nathan Cleary, children Brady, Sawyer, and Nathan) of Branson, MO, and nephew Luke Riutzel, wife Christine, of Branson, MO, Mark and Barb Mattke and nephew Dalton Mattke of Sparta, WI, as well as a great niece and numerous great nephews. He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans. His interests included making up for lost time with his family, riding and restoring antique motorcycles, marksmanship, history, reading and writing, the Green Bay Packers, and chocolate. He really came to love Chadwick, especially the Chadwick Fire Department whom he asks donations for in lieu of flowers. Funeral services for Ret. Major George Wheelock will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, July 14, 2017 in Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark with Pastor Mark Wright officiating. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday evening  in the funeral home.
